Ensuring non-discriminatory access to justice with children

This course, through a series of definitions, video and other interactive elements, will introduce you to the 2021 Global Declaration on Justice With Children and the way in which this instrument advocates for non-discrimination. You will learn more about the instrument itself, the various forms of discrimination encountered by children and young people seeking to access justice, and what our recommendations are to promote non-discriminatory access to justice with children. 

With this Mooc, Justice with Children wants to... 

• Focus on common types of inequality and discrimination to prevent them.
• Understand and respond to the reasons why Indigenous, minority, and marginalised children have more contact with police and why it is more difficult for them to access justice.
• Treat all children equally and fairly in access to justice. Respect different types of justice (criminal, civil, administrative, traditional/customary, transitional, and social justice).
• Consider each child’s age, disabilities, gender, and other identities and needs. Respect the cultures and languages of all children.
• Find other options instead of detention. Use different approaches and spaces in communities and make sure all children can access them.
• Persuade political leaders to make the justice system fair for all children and to give proper resources and training to everyone who works with children.
